Thanks, Kristine and Wendy. Wendy, I thought of you with this book! It is rather awesome. My next trick is to try and digitize the very large map. I was surprised that it was still inside my volume, would have been so easy to lose.

Well, exactly, John, I was thrilled to finally find one actual record where SHE spells her name (presumably) to the paper's editor, so in future I am going with Marcy. She has very few records. I go around and around but I like to record the person with my name of choice and only leave an unofficial note about the discrepancies. This is mostly because I put no stock in any spelling prior to 1850. If there was confusion about the NAME itself, not just the spelling, I would definitely use the alternate name field, or for, say, a non-intuitive nickname like a Mary that is also called Polly.

In answer to your other comment, there is a good set of books at the RIHS Library on the Aldriches (NOT the green George Aldrich Genealogy), and I am going to put the citation together tonight and post it here; many people ask about that.

Diane: I went back and reviewed all your Aldrich posts and have a question for you based on today's post and the cumulative information you have on Marcy/Mercy (Ballou) Aldrich. Since the two newspaper notices you highlight today refer to her as "Marcy" rather than Mercy, how do you carry her in your genealogy -- Marcy or Mercy (or perhaps both)? I have encountered this same problem and am usually torn as to how to handle it, so often use both with a virgule between OR I drop a comment explaining in a note. I am curious about your approach since your May 30, 2012 post refers to her as Marcy and your Sept. 17, 2012 and January 9, 2013 posts refer to her as Mercy. Do the newspaper notices where the two warring parties each refer to her as "Marcy" resolve the matter in your mind?

As always, and excellently researched and reported post!

I found this post particularly interesting because my mother's family are all from the Cumberland, Attleboro, Rehoboth area AND Anne Aldrich married Peter Miller/Millard, early owners of the property at 551 High Street in Cumberland where my mother grew up and where I visited my grandparents often as a child. Anne Aldrich and Peter Miller are my 5X great grandparents. Since Nathan and Marcy (Ballou) Aldrich lived in Cumberland, we should exchange Aldrich information (of which I have very little thus far).
